EM Coding Trend Analysis:
Growth of Services, Charges and Payments
|
This statistical analysis involves the historical growth, from a coding perspective,
of E&M Services, Charges and Payments. Based on Medicare data from 1998 through 2002, the analysis
illustrates a variety of interesting trends.
A general review of the statistics shows that the top ten E/M codes include:
Established
Patient Office Visits(99211-99215) Subsequent
Hospital Care (99231-99233), and Subsequent Nursing Facility Care(99311-99312).
In addition, the most commonly coded CPT® was code 99213, for established patient office visits.
As might be expected, the overall E/M code utilization generally increased over the four year
period, experiencing an average growth of 6% each year since 2000. Notable exceptions are CPT
codes 99212, 99215 and 99231which declined slightly, and 99311 which fell 20%.
The two codes
with the highest percentage increase over the time period were 99211 and 99313 with close to
a 24% increase.
